Hit the links in Macomb – a great experience awaits.

Got game?

Macomb County is well-known for its coastline along Lake St. Clair. As blue as the waters are, the green of the golf courses gives reason to celebrate the outdoors as well. With 26 golf courses to choose from, there’s a course to fit every style of play in Macomb.

Golf season in Michigan typically runs from April through October, making now the perfect time to hit the links. Hosting a golf show on CBS Detroit Radio has given me the opportunity to see some of the best courses our region has to offer.

One of Macomb’s finest courses, The Orchards, offers an exciting round for any style of play. Long considered the top public golf course in all of southeastern lower Michigan, it has country club-like conditioning on a layout worthy of hosting the Michigan Open. The experience of playing The Orchards in Washington Township is that good and then some.

The front nine is challenging with excellent shot values-but the real fun begins on the back. My personal favorite is hole number 11 – a lengthy par five that plays downhill to a wide open double fairway with several large bunkers dotting the landscape.  The green is one of the largest on the course.

The Orchards Director of Golf, Jeff Stalcup, recently shared his thoughts on the course, saying that internationally renowned course architect, Robert Trent Jones Jr., gave the people of Macomb County an absolute top quality golf experience that has been treasured since it opened over 20 years ago.

The Orchards was good enough to be recognized by several national publications as one of the top public courses one can play in the entire country.  Since its opening in 1993, the national rankings have been coming in. Golf Magazine and Golf Digest both gave The Orchards “Top Ten Best New Public Course” recognition when the course opened. Golfweek has also ranked it among their “100 Best Modern Courses”. Macomb County is lucky to be able to call it our own.
