Five years ago, upon moving from Washington, D.C. to Detroit, my top dining priority was finding really great pizza. Pizza, after all, is all food groups in one — the perfect food for any occasion.
My Detroit pizza hunt led me to Luigis Original – one of my favorite restaurants in Macomb County on the corner of Jefferson and Lanse Creuse streets in Harrison Township. It’s an unsuspecting little place you might cruise right past. The kind of Italian restaurant you’d expect to find on an inland Michigan lake that your grandparents frequented.
The pizza is just the way I like it — round with a thinner crust. I know Detroit is known for the deep dish square pizza, but this is the one I prefer.
Luigis marks the end of my hunt for fantastic pizza in southeast Michigan. It’s about 30 minutes from Detroit, but worth the drive.
