For the fourth year in a row, my husband and I are participating in Sprint & Splash – a fun, recreational event to benefit Lake St. Clair. No doubt the most beautiful and valuable natural resource in Macomb County, Lake St. Clair, has been a source of enjoyment my whole life. And as the county’s environmental prosecutor, I have a strong personal and professional interest in promoting and protecting this prized possession. What better way to do so than to have fun playing in and on Lake St. Clair?
My activity of choice for the Sprint & Splash – the duathlon (kayak) – a 5K run and 2-mile kayak. Two of my favorite activities, running and kayaking – well maybe not the running so much, but kayaking on Lake St. Clair – was a long-awaited desire. The duathlon starts out with a 5K run that brought us in and through Lake St. Clair Metropark, hugging the shoreline most of the way. You just can’t beat that kind of scenery. While not a competitive runner, there were enough fast and slow runners to have me fit somewhere in the middle. After the run, we end at the beach, hop right into our kayaks and glide into the water. Again, there are typically enough fast and slow paddlers to stay inside the pack. The course is clearly identified with many volunteers available to point us in the right direction. And although it was challenging, the presence of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Marine Division gave us all a sense of security.
The two-mile kayak ends on the beach where it began with more volunteers to help everyone ashore. Then, it’s a short sprint back on land to the finish line.
After our event, we enjoyed the remaining races and activities. There is definitely plenty to do for everyone and at any age. It was truly a joy to see the park alive with activity and fun. I’ve watched Sprint & Splash grow over the years, from a simple race four years ago to an all-out event. It gets bigger and better each time with the addition of vendors, food and craft beers (my husband’s favorite). This is an event that simply should not be missed.

In addition to the duathlon, Sprint and Splash includes 5k Fun Run and Stand-up Paddleboard competitions. All participants receive a breakfast with their registration, and will also have the opportunity to visit the Beach Village after their race, which features a variety of local vendors. Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, the event’s presenting sponsor, will have doctors and physical therapists on site providing training tips and first aid. There will be a beer tent, featuring world class craft beer from Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. Online registration closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2. For more information, visit www.sprintandsplash.com.
