Macomb County combats winter blues with two fun events this weekend

When the weather gets really cold in Michigan, it can be hard to think of fun things to do for the family. Luckily, this weekend, Macomb County has you covered. So if you’re starting to get a touch of cabin fever, check out these two events that are sure to kick the winter blues.

St. Clair Shores Aqua Freeze Festival 2016 to provide great family fun this weekend

St. Clair Shores Aqua Freeze Festival got its start in 2013 when a few friends mentioned on Facebook that an Ice Festival in our city would be a great idea. Combining the festival with Pond Hockey was a suggestion. The idea turned into a few meetings about what we could do and who we could work with to accomplish our lofty goal. The Pond Hockey was never a goal we could accomplish, but we found ways to create a great outdoor winter event in St. Clair Shores, MI.

In just a few months’ time, a committee was formed by our mayor and the planning began. We worked hard to get commitments from local businesses and corporate sponsors to create a spectacular Aqua Freeze Festival in February 2014 and 2015.

In our third year, 2016, we have added a few more features for more family fun. Please come and join us. Our giant Jenga, kids’ activities like coloring, face painting, crafts and more will be available. Our zip line will be a fun time from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday. A Police vs. City fowling contest on Sunday will follow the ever-popular polar plunge at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Live music in the heated tent will be there again this year. Many established and popular groups will be on hand throughout the weekend to enjoy.

Beer and wine, along with many food vendors offering fish dinners, pizza, loaded potatoes, various soups, chili dogs, nachos, popcorn and late night snacks, will be offered by a variety of charity groups raising funds to help others. A bake sale and polish dinner will be available on Sunday too.

The fowling tent will be open all weekend for anyone to try the game for free. You can also take a free horse and carriage ride around the park. The horse and carriage will be available from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Additionally, we are sponsoring the Collegiate Ice Carving Competition from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Come out and see the talented college students do a live carving for prize money and a certificate too. It is a wonder to behold.

We created this event for the people of the metro-Detroit area to have a fun weekend to enjoy the wonderful winter weather Michigan has to offer. Lots of entertainment for families too. Come and see what the Nautical Mile in St. Clair Shores has to offer.

Our website is has the complete line up for the musical entertainment including a performance by Elvis Impersonator Fred Wolff from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

There is lots of fun planned, so make sure to bring the family. There is free admittance and  free parking during the Aqua Freeze Fest, which runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, February 19, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21.

Linda Bologna and Geri Hofmann are co-chairs of the SCS Aqua Freeze 2016.
