Day camp at the Macomb Family YMCA is a great place for kids to have fun, build character and community, and develop healthy lifestyle skills. It provides opportunities for children from all backgrounds to come together and build a supportive community while having fun in the sun! We provide the space for children to build relationships, try new skills and create lasting memories they will carry into adulthood.
This year, YMCA day camp will be better than ever. In addition to daily sports, arts and crafts, swimming, games, team-building activities and character-development activities, we will be part of an initiative that focuses on increasing healthy eating and physical activity (HEPA) and reducing summer learning loss.
As part of our HEPA initiatives, we strive to provide the best fuel for kids both physically and mentally. We are pleased to offer a healthy breakfast and lunch to all participants at no extra cost to them. In addition, we will be using evidence-based curricula to increase physical activity through games and sports and instill the mentality of “energy in equals energy out” at an early age.
Healthy minds are also a priority. Kids participate in weekly hands-on lessons led by an “edu-tainment” professional. The experiential learning activities emphasize STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and literacy while remaining focused on FUN!
Summer day camp is a high-quality experience for kids 3-15 years old. We offer age appropriate activities and special leadership opportunities for our older youth. Kids enjoy daily crafts, camp games, sports, swimming and weekly field trips including the Michigan Science Center, the Detroit Zoo, Westview Orchards, Zap Zone and a Detroit Tigers Game!
Highly-trained staff is a huge part of what makes YMCA camp so special. All staff complete 40 hours of intensive training prior to the start of camp. In addition, all staff go through an in-depth hiring process including a background check and drug test. They are also all CPR, first aid, AED, and oxygen-certified. The ratio of counselors to campers ranges from one counselor for every six to 12 children, depending on age group. Dedicated and well-trained counselors provide for the highest quality and safest experience for our campers. Year after year, campers return for new experiences, time with friends (and soon-to-be friends) and opportunities to learn, grow and thrive!
Jay is one of those campers. He started camp when he was in first grade. He is now 9 years old. He came to us with a diagnosis of ADHD and the therapists at his school recommended day camp at the Y for the summer. At the time, our focus was on keeping him moving. His mother works during the day and didn’t want him sitting around. He was in need of a safe place equipped to handle his behavior issues that would still be fun and that would work financially.
“When Jay first started camp, we knew right away something good was happening – he would come home worn out and exhausted. We noticed his confidence was improving. He would take on new challenges he wouldn’t have before, like jumping into the pool,” said his mother. “More importantly, Jay made huge progress with his social skills at camp … Jay was able to progress socially because of his counselors. Instead of punishing him right away for bad behaviors, they challenged him to think through his problems and identify better ways to approach situations. They worked with him on problem solving and helped build his confidence. Because of their help, he learned to play effectively with other kids. Now, he is able to make and keep friends.”
Jay is just one example of the impact that the Macomb Family YMCA Summer Day Camp has on its campers. This summer, we have 12 themed weeks of fun, learning and growth. Campers can choose any and all weeks between June 13 and Sept. 2. Registration is open now! Contact Lauren Klein at (586) 468-1411 or firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
