Youth soccer tournament to honor World Refugee Day

Nothing brings children together like a little friendly competition.

Which is why, in honor of World Refugee Day (June 20), a group of local organizations have come together to sponsor the Friendship Games, a one-day youth soccer tournament on Saturday, June 25.

Children ages 6-14 are eligible to participate and will each receive a free T-shirt, participation award, snacks and water. The tournament will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Delia Park in Sterling Heights and will foster mutual understanding, respect, and friendship among the participants and the community as a whole. Nothing could be more fitting for World Refugee Day, a day that encourages us all to be more compassionate and kind toward our neighbors, no matter where they are from.

Registration for this free event closes on June 22, so make sure you register your child as soon as possible. The registration form can be found here. Please fill it out and email it to, or mail it to Welcoming Michigan, 4605 Cass Ave., Detroit, MI 48202.

No previous soccer experience is required, but your child may want to wear shin guards or cleats if she or he has them. For more information, please call Kimberly Liepshutz at (586) 909-4261.

Jenna Russell is a summer intern for the Macomb County Department of Planning & Economic Development. She is a junior at Oakland University.
