Those of us who live or play on or around Lake St. Clair already know it’s a lake worth celebrating. But you may not know that there’s an event dedicated to just that: celebrating Lake St. Clair.
It’s Celebrate the Lake Day, and it’s set for noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at MacRay Harbor, 30675 North River Road in Harrison Township. Outdoor recreation enthusiasts, boaters and others who love the water and want to learn more about Lake St. Clair will want to attend this event. All activities are free and open to the public.
And this is truly an event that has something for everyone who loves the water (especially THIS body of water). The event includes activities for kids, boating educational displays, a nautical yard sale—even a chance to take a free “Welcome to the Water” demo boat ride on a new 23-foot Crest Pontoon boat or 27-foot Sea Ray Sundeck.
The free demo ride event is sponsored by Colony Marine and is part of a nationally coordinated National Marina Day, which is also being celebrated on June 10. MacRay Harbor, the Michigan Boating Industries Association, Discover Boating, Michigan DNR, Pure Michigan, Boat US and other groups have created this new opportunity for those who may not have a boat to get a better appreciation of what boating is like. The 20-30 minute free demo rides on the lake will run from noon to 4 p.m.
A major attraction that will be docked near the site is the Pride of Michigan, an 82-foot research and training vessel. The Pride will highlight scientific research being done by the sea cadets through the Great Lakes system.
Special Celebrate the Lake Kids’ Day activities include bounce houses, face painting, balloon art, a magic show, T-shirt painting, arts and crafts, interactive games and much more.
Educational displays include the Anchor Bay Yachting Association, Clinton River Watershed Council, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Macomb County Marine Sheriff Department, and the Clean Marina Program. Events and activities will be held at an exhibit area located on the east side of the MacRay Banquet and Events Facility.
Also featured at the event will be a nautical yard sale from noon to 4 p.m. in the main parking lot. Food and refreshments will be available for a small charge.
The celebration is hosted by Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative, Clinton River Watershed Council, MacRay Harbor, Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce, Macomb County Chamber, Anchor Bay Yachting Association, Colony Marine and SkipperBud’s.
Capping off the evening will be a free Concert Under the Stars from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the MacRay parking lot behind the Banquet & Events Center. The concert is sponsored by SkipperBud’s.
So bring the family to Celebrate the Lake for a day of discovery and fun!
Bradley Simmons is the executive director of the Lake St. Clair Tourism Initiative.
